The Minah Bird
Cobra Killer’s Gina V. D’Orie on Berlin.
“Before the German Reunion people moved to West Berlin, mainly to not complete military service or to just live their lives doing art, drugs, freaking out, setting supermarkets on fire, being lazy, not justifying anything, being not accepted… Nowadays, careerists who would have never dared to come to Berlin - East or West - move here to make money, become famous, ride on strange vehicles, follow the hype, be a bit dirty or as successful as their brothers, be cool and accepted… The whole atmosphere is completely different now. Berlin’s so-called ‘underground culture’ celebrates the American Way of Live - how to make profit, what to say to be in the next Sony commercial, champagne on the rocks… A few years ago, people who represented the big industries had to take care that nobody kicked a foot in their face. Now you can find them in the so-called ‘underground clubs’ in the bathroom doing cocaine. Everybody licks ass. But we don’t care - maybe tomorrow it will be Prague, Paris or Odessa.”
