Santogold’s bangin’ debut single, ‘Creator’, suggested she was ripe to become some kind of M.I.A./ female-Spank-Rock hybrid. Her debut album finds her dilly-dallying in a far broader prism of sounds - reggae, rock, soul, pop - with varied results. Can’t blame a girl for trying, but you can hate a girl for trying too hard. There’s plenty of decent songs on here, but it sounds like Santi’s got an identity crisis. And ‘Creator’ remains her best offering.
