During his Stool Pigeon interview last year, the then 49-year-old Mark E Smith referred to being “48-odd”. If that suggested a complex about turning 50, this album confirms it. “I’m a 50-year-old man, and I like it,” he growls during an 11-minute track titled (yes) ‘Fifty-Year-Old Man’. Like its predecessor, Imperial Wax Solvent introduces a new line-up, flits between levity and malice, and doesn’t quite regain the dizzying peak that was ‘Fall Heads Roll’.
