Golden Silvers a glistening band for all seasons

Words Dedee W

‘Arrows of Eros’, the debut single from London’s Golden Silvers, is an instant moment of sunshiny bliss. That snazzy bit of synth and those sunny three-part harmonies conjure up images of a fantasy beach party somewhere on another planet. The band think it’s a fitting description.

“That’d be a good idea for a music video,” says drummer Alexis.

“I might have to pass that off as my own,” adds frontman Gwilym.

If only they hadn’t already settled on cats and naked ladies.

Things are going well for Golden Silvers: their single is getting a release on Young and Lost Club in mid-July; they recently won Glastonbury’s New Talent competition, along with Manchester’s The Travelling Band, scoring a slot on the Other Stage as a result; they’ve toured with Mystery Jets, winning loyal fans in the process; and they’ve made a home for themselves, bands they love and a crowd of regulars at their monthly night, Bronze Club, held at The Macbeth in east London.

Indeed, they’re proving themselves to be far more than just a feelgood band or ‘The Holloways with a synth’. Those Beach Boys harmonies are just one influence of many.

“We are a feelgood band, but there are certain bits in the music where it can get a bit darker and a bit heavier,” says Alexis. “And we’re not just around for the summer - we’ll be around for all the seasons.”

“We’re a seasonal band,” adds Gwilym.

Bassist Ben: “We’re like the opposite of a seasonal band - we’re a pan-seasonal band.”

Some examples, guys?

“If we were to do an autumn song, it would have to be ‘Magic Touch’,” continues Ben, “because that’s about losing something, which is what happens in autumn - the trees lose their leaves.”

Alexis: “‘Locked Up My Head’ would be a wintry one, because the lyrics are quite cold…”

Gwilym: “Um, ‘Another Universe’ for winter… nah, that’s more autumny.”

You get the idea. To illustrate the point further, they’ve wisely chosen a contrasting track for the b-side to their debut. ‘Fade to Black’ sounds more like a spiritual, perfectly complementing the bouncing neon pink rays of ‘Arrows of Eros’ and setting a more sombre tone.

So there you have it: Golden Silvers - capable of glistening brightly all year round.
