New music with Johann Gottfried Herder and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

***
Name: Metz
Based: Toronto
Listen: ‘Wet Blanket’
Need to Know: Noise punk so beautifully horrible and loud that it brings a single tear of joy to my eye.
Hegel: We’ve sung the praise of Canadian noise punks Metz before on here, and we’ll sing them again, damn it! Because quite frankly, this is the most exciting guitar music we’ve heard in a while, in fact it’s so damn good that it rejuvenates my faith in mankind, or at the very least it rejuvenates my faith in Canadians, because let me tell you, I was seriously doubting those moose-farming seal clubbers for a while back there.
In any case, new track ‘Wet Blanket’ (which you can download!) blows all their soft rock pastiche-ing, hipster-baiting contemporaries straight out of the water. This is some primordial shit right here, and it sounds somewhat like a more intense Nation Of Ulysses, crossed with the industrial skronk of Big Black. So that’s plenty primordial then, and in fact I think the only sane response to this single is for me to drop three tabs of acid and run naked through Whitehall, assaulting all and sunder. The revolution starts with one flung piece of LSD-laced excrement at a time.

Who: Liars remix The Twilight Sad
Where: Brooklyn
Listen: ‘Nil’
Need to know: Liars continue their rich form following the excellent WIXIW
Herder: We’re welcoming types here at the Zimmer. We’ve always tried to avoid getting preachy, because we truly believe music should be about bringing people together, man. And if someone tells us they can’t stop listening to the new Rusko, say, we simply shift the conversation. “Ah I see,” we say, “and what’s your favourite colour?” That said, if you didn’t love Liars’ excellent WIXIW, it’s safe to say we’ll treat you like the soulless, sub-human scum you are.
If you did, however, you’re in for a treat! The shapeshifting trio have reworked The Twilight Sad’s ‘Nil’ into a dark techno banger for The ‘Sad’s upcoming remix album. It’s so good, I couldn’t get any sleep last night after listening to it. Or maybe I couldn’t get any sleep because it sounds like the battle cry of a raving insomniac. Bit of a chicken and egg situation, really, but either way, feast your ears on it and download it for free by ‘liking’ the Twilight Sad’s Facebook page.
