"I'm unhappy, hope you're unhappy too" 21-year-old Moz writes a cheery postcard
Here’s a missive scribbled by a young Morrissey to Glasgow-based correspondent Robert Mackie, in response to an ad placed in Sounds magazine. Despite rudely asking if being Scottish ‘bothers’ him, Morrissey went on to exchange letters with Mackie over an 18-month period. This one was written three years before Moz became a member of The Smiths, in 1980 — but you’ll note the taste for homoerotic imagery is already present and correct.
