Exclusive 'Suburban Gothic' mix from the Canadian dancehall pop outfit

Alanna Stuart and DJ Pho’s project Bonjay is sprung from Canadian capital Ottawa’s dancehall scene, but since upping sticks for Toronto they’ve proved themselves capable of a poise and maturity well in advance of their bashment roots, adding pop hooks and Stuart’s gorgeous, R&B-inflected vocals into the melting pot.
Their ‘Suburban Gothic’ mix well reflects such an MO, taking in female-fronted practitioners of twisted, sensual R&B sounds like Grimes, Wildbirds & Peacedrums and Braids, stopping by their own heart-in-mouth take on Caribou’s ‘Jamelia’ and tossing in a little dancehall courtesy of hip hop don Supa Dups. There are also welcome dips into dubstep via Hyperdub troupe Darkstar, and gorgeous, piano-led house from acid revivalists Cubic Zirconia.
Rounded out by TV On The Radio’s barbershop cover of Pixies’ ‘Mr Grieves’, this is a moody, soulful mix from a group we’re properly excited about — just the thing to kick off your week, then.
