Mixtape: Connan Mockasin

An adventurous, cinematic mix from New Zealand's cult psych wanderer

First up, a confession: we totally slept on Forever Dolphin Love, Connan Mockasin’s deep-psych masterwork from earlier in the year on Phantasy/Because Music. The record’s hardly been off our hi-fis since then, so we resolved to make up for lost time and ask the New Zealander to make us a mixtape ahead of his UK tour at the end of the month — and predictably, it’s a blinder. Connan opens with a curtain-raising flourish in ‘Mushi Mezuru Hime’ by Joe Hisaishi, composer and long-term collaborator of Studio Ghibli great Hayao Miyazaki. It’s a strange and beguiling intro to a mix taking in eccentric greats from across the globe, including acid surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky, Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Ryuichi Sakamoto (in a terrific collaboration with Japan singer David Sylvian), immensely influential French composer Michel Colombier… and Daft Punk, on a louche, lesser-known number off Discovery.
