January has been heralded as the month of ‘stealth mode’ with artists shunning lengthy fanfares in the music press and instead choosing to go under the radar when releasing new material. First there was Bowie’s surprise single release ‘Where Are We Now?’ and today Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) casually announced the release of 0181 through his Facebook page.

“I’m going to release a new Four Tet LP today,” he posted.

The ‘album’, which is structured as a mixtape, is a compilation of unreleased material recorded between 1997 and 2001. All the tracks on the album pre-date his 2001 breakthrough LP, Pause.

These early recordings are consistent with Four Tet’s signature style incorporating elements of breakbeat, house and techno. You can stream or download the album for free. A vinyl LP will be available soon.
