Sobering news to start the year, as recent figures reveal that most of Pitchfork’s top 50 albums of 2011 are yet to enjoy American sales to match their critical acclaim.

While Bon Iver topped the annual list and sold more than 300k copies in the US, Oneohtrix Point Never’s Replica, ranked as the year’s sixth best record, managed only 3,800 sales by December.

EMA’s Past-Life Martyred Saints — placed at 13 in the end of year list — sold 6,100 copies, while Juliana Barwick and AraabMuzik sold only 1,000 albums respectively despite positive reviews.

The numbers, listed below and compiled by PhD student and former Pitchfork writer Eric Harvey, show that only Beyoncé and Drake shifted more than the requisite 500k copies to be certified gold in the States, while Jay-Z and Kanye West’s modest joint offering Watch The Throne had sold more than 1.1m copies since its August release.

Albums selling fewer than 3,000 copies in a week automatically drop out of the US Top 200 chart, so some of the nicely rounded sales figures in the list are estimates for such releases. The list shows American album sales up to December 16, while the Pitchfork top 50 list was published on December 15.
