LUPE Fiasco was forced offstage at a show in Washington in honour of Barack Obama’s inauguration after launching into a 30-minute diatribe against the US president midway through his set.

The Kick, Push rapper performed a 30-minute anti-war track in which he berated the president for failing to respond to Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza strip (watch a clip below). According to Foreign Policy reporter Josh Rogin, he was told by organisers to move onto the next song, but had to be ordered offstage when he refused to accept that the jig was up.

“Lupe Fiasco just got thrown off stage here at the Hamilton Live after he went on an anti-Obama diatribe mid set,” Rogin tweeted.

“So Lupe played one anti-war song for 30 min and said he didn’t vote for Obama and eventually was told to move on to the next song.

“Lupe refused to move to the next song so a team of security guards came on stage and told him to go.”

Fiasco has been vocal in his criticism of Obama in the past, which makes his booking for the show puzzling, to say the least. Last year, he accused the president of “[killing] little children” with his controversial backing of drone strikes in Pakistan.

For their part, event organisers StartUp Rock On denied that Lupe’s show was cut short for political reasons; rather, they say the plug was pulled after a “bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied”.
