WHEN journo David Thorpe started a social network campaign to send chart rapper Pitbull to a remote branch of Walmart in Kodiak, Alaska, the internet hooted with laughter.

Thorpe had spotted the opportunity to hijack a corporate competition promising to fly Pitbull out to perform at the Walmart outlet receiving the most votes from fans on Facebook. In the event, 60,000 people voted to ‘exile’ the rapper to Alaska, and to his credit, he decided to go through with the trip.

Pitbull made an appearance at an outdoor venue in the town, on a remote archipelago in the south of the US’ northernmost state, where he was serenaded by local performers and presented with a free pair of rubber boots and bear repellent. Finally, he went to the local Walmart for a quick meet-and-greet sesh.

Perhaps narked that he had successfully derailed their gig, Walmart and contest co-sponsor Energy Sheets invited Thorpe along for the show, but as they weren’t prepared to stump up money for flights, it seemed he would be staying put.

Then Pitbull offered to personally pay for him to come out and join him, which he did. And that’s how you turn bad publicity into good, folks!

Thorpe told Buzzfeed of the experience: “Pitbull was very cool and unflappable. I didn’t get to speak to him too much, but his entourage spoke very highly of him.”
