Picture Book: Porcelain Raft
Mauro Remiddi on his part in North Korean propaganda machine, and other stories
In case you missed the memo, our Picture Book series goes for a furtive shufti through the photo albums of some of our favourite artists (DELS! Little Dragon! Cerebral Ballzy!), presenting the highlights along with anecdotes from the musician(s) in question for your personal delight and delectation. This week, Porcelain Raft — aka London-based insomni-popper Mauro Remiddi, whose debut Strange Weekend is due early next year on Secretly Canadian — gives us a fascinating account of his career in music to date that touches on the heart-warming, the absurd and the downright sinister, thanks to a bizarre trip to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. July 2011: This is me and George Clooney… our wax reproduction figures. I was touring with Yuck, we were in LA and once inside the hotel guess who was there to welcome us? Yes, Georgie. He didn’t talk much but seemed like a nice guy, if a bit stiff. The gig that night was a funny one, Max (Bloom, Yuck guitarist) wasn’t allowed in the venue before the actual gig — age restriction. That sucked, so instead we hung out outside the venue and had a laugh. The morning after we jumped in the hotel swimming pool for a last chilling session, it was so hot in LA… I left an iced coffee on the table for Clooney. Oh, those were the days.
