It’s easy to forget just how shocking Devo’s deconstructed pop must have sounded to hip and square ears alike in the mid/late seventies. Not for nothing did David Bowie call this lot the “band of the future”, and maybe that’s what the crowd at Max’s Kansas City in New York were thinking during this early set from 1977, just uploaded to YouTube with surprisingly decent sound quality for the most part. The band starts with a version of ‘Satisfaction’ which, if anything, is even more emptied out of sex and soul than their album take on the Stones track, and goes on to perform tracks ‘Timing X/Soo Bawls’, ‘Mongoloid’ and ‘Gut Feeling’.
