Before Paul Thomas Anderson hit the big time with films like Boogie Nights and The Master, he oversaw a variety show project for VH1 which was to feature frequent collaborator and music producer Jon Brion. Alas, the programme never saw the light of day, and all that remains is a solitary pilot episode starring the late Elliott Smith. Of course, this in itself is something of a victory, and the complete episode has just been uploaded to YouTube — you can hear Elliott perform renditions of ‘Son Of Sam’, ‘Independence Day’, ‘Bottle Up And Explode’, ‘Everything Means Nothing To Me’ and ‘Happiness’ below. In addition to those tracks — performed with Brion (famed for his production work with Kanye West and Fiona Apple) and pianist Brad Mehldau — there are covers of Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’, The Kinks’ ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and Big Star’s ‘Nighttime’ to enjoy here. Fill yer boots!
