Since his 40th birthday in 2006, it’s fair to say that so-called ‘slacker’ J Mascis has been working like Optimus Prime with a gut full of espresso. There’s been a solo album, two from his metal group Witch, a debut from side project Sweet Apple, new releases from his school band Heavy Blanket and synth pop outfit The Electric Anthology Project… and that’s before you get to three albums by Dinosaur Jr, including the latest, I Bet On Sky. By rights this album should be by numbers garbage but in fact it contains a number of excellent tracks like the QOTSA/Robert Palmer-esque ‘Recognition’. In fact it makes you wonder just how amazing some of these albums could be if he spent slightly longer on them.
