In a world of lo-fi odes to the late John Hughes’s filmic oeuvre, Anthony Gonzales’ M83 project is an HD remaster with CGI trimmings. Now he’s back for a sixth bout of solemn synth-tickling with Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, a double LP that makes even Saturdays=Youth’s sunset-pink overtures seem thin as a service station sandwich filling. An epic slog it turns out to be, too, with Gonzales burying his undoubted pop smarts beneath a cavalcade of big-sky piousness, making this the most ludicrous attempt at recapturing lost youth since Richard Branson: the ballooning years sploshed to their soggy conclusion in the Pacific Ocean, 1998.
