It’s rare that the moral high ground turns out to be a lucrative place to stand, but when an ad for Mike Hadreas’ new album as Perfume Genius was pulled from Youtube recently, the Seattle musician grabbed more column inches than his co-star, gay porn actor Arpad Miklis, has had in a lifetime’s work in grumble flicks. If the clip’s removal helped Hadreas flog a few more records, though (the vid was essentially an extended shot of two grown men hugging), no one could begrudge him, since Put Your Back… is every bit as affecting as its predecessor, adding optimism and beefed-up arrangements to his harrowing sadcore songs.
