To the untrained ear, Piñata by Volcano! might sound rather similar to their last two efforts, whereas to those with heightened and acute critical faculties it sounds, er, rather similar to their last two efforts. There is a smidgen of Mexican seasoning sprinkled over this one to bring out the Latin American flavour (a piñata is one of those decorative lanterns filled with toys and sweets), though otherwise it’s business as usual for a band that confound with their spontaneous and off-the-wall stylings. The spasmodic Mariachi-meets-the-Magic-Band melange may not be for everyone, and Aaron With’s vocals can be testing, but it’s an arresting and incendiary assault on the senses that refuses to be ignored.
